Smallpdf is a polished PDF site with a free plan and a paid one. Whether the paid one is worth it depends on what you do with PDFs. We make DocPro, a competitor, so we have kept to what Smallpdf says on its own pages and we say plainly when paying is the right call. Details are as of November 2026.
What Pro adds
According to Smallpdf's pricing page, the free plan has limited document downloads, daily limits on most tools, limited mobile app access, limited cloud storage and limited AI tools. Pro lifts those limits. It lists unlimited use of 30 or more tools and unlimited downloads. It also lists three things that matter most in practice: Edit Text, OCR and strong compression.
Pro also lists unlimited AI tools, unlimited cloud storage and a Sign.com Premium subscription. A 7-day free trial is offered, and the account returns to Free when it ends.
The price is not in the page text we could read. Smallpdf's blog says the yearly plan is 25 percent cheaper per month than monthly billing. For the amount in your currency, open the pricing page yourself.
Jobs that need the paid plan
- Editing existing text in a PDF. Edit Text is listed as a Pro feature. Free tools rarely do this well.
- Strong compression. Smallpdf's compress page offers Basic, Moderate and Strong. Basic is free. Moderate and Strong are Pro.
- OCR on scanned files. OCR is listed under Pro, so turning scans into searchable or editable text there needs the plan.
- Unlimited tasks. If you process many files a day, the free daily limits stop you.
- Batch conversions. Smallpdf's own comparison names converting PDFs in batches as a reason to upgrade.
- Signing through Sign.com at volume. Free Sign.com accounts are capped at 2 documents a month.
- Working across desktop and mobile with cloud storage and unlimited app access.
Jobs free tools already do
- Merge, split, rotate and reorder pages. DocPro does these free with no counter. iLovePDF's free plan lists a 100 MB limit for merge and split, and PDF24's online tools are free.
- Basic compression. Smallpdf's Basic level is free. iLovePDF's compress page offers three levels and its free plan lists files up to 200 MB. PDF24's tool offers detailed settings and is free, funded by advertising.
- Converting PDF to Word, Excel or images. DocPro converts on your device. iLovePDF's free plan lists a 15 MB limit for Office conversions.
- Basic OCR. DocPro runs OCR in the browser in English, Arabic, Persian, Urdu and Hindi. iLovePDF's free plan includes only basic OCR PDF, with advanced OCR in Premium.
- Password protecting, unlocking and cleaning metadata. DocPro does all three free.
- Filling a form and adding an image signature. DocPro fills forms free. Its image signature is DocPro Pro at A$5.99 a month, so it is not free.
One caution on DocPro. Its Compress PDF re-saves pages as images, so text becomes unselectable. That is fine for a form upload and a poor fit if you need to search or copy the text afterwards. Its OCR can make a scanned PDF searchable, but it does not edit text.
Who should pay
Pay for Pro if PDFs are part of your regular work. Smallpdf's own guide describes it that way, and we agree. Typical cases are an office worker who fixes typos in contracts, a student or freelancer scanning receipts and notes every week, a person who must meet strict portal size limits often, or a team that wants one account on phone and desktop.
Try the 7-day trial first and cancel before it ends if it does not earn its place. Check the pricing page for the cancellation terms that apply to you.
Who should not
Skip Pro if you merge a few files a month, shrink an occasional attachment or convert one document now and then. Use the free plan, iLovePDF free or PDF24, whichever limit you hit last. For private files, use an on-device tool such as DocPro, because Smallpdf's free tools upload the file and delete it after one hour.
A middle path also works. Use DocPro or PDF24 for everyday jobs and pay for a month of Pro only when a deadline needs text editing or strong compression. Read DocPro vs Smallpdf or the three-way comparison for more. For PDF24, see DocPro vs PDF24.
What we could not confirm
We could not read Smallpdf's dollar prices, the exact daily task limit on the free plan or its free file-size cap. The pages say limits apply without giving numbers. Check them before you commit.
