Smallpdf is a Swiss-founded PDF service known for its clean interface. DocPro is a web app that processes your files on your own device. We write DocPro, so this comparison is not neutral by default. We have kept to what Smallpdf says on its own pages, and we point out where it is the stronger choice. Details are as of October 2026 and can change.
The short version
- Choose DocPro for private files and quick jobs without daily limits or an account.
- Choose Smallpdf if you want a polished suite with mobile and desktop apps, document scanning on your phone, and paid features such as editing text, stronger compression and OCR.
Where files go
Smallpdf's free tools work by uploading your file to its servers. Its security information says files from free tools are deleted after one hour, that transfers use 256-bit TLS encryption, that its servers are in Ireland and that it cites ISO/IEC 27001. Its privacy policy says it uses external providers for hosting, payment and analytics. For account users, files kept in its storage stay until you delete them.
DocPro keeps the file on your device. The tools are loaded into your browser and do the work there. No file is sent to DocPro, so there is nothing to delete later and nothing for a third-party provider to hold. Accounts and Pro subscriptions are handled separately and do not involve your documents.
Those are different kinds of promise. One is a policy that governs what a company does with a copy. The other is a design where no copy is made. If you want a deeper look at the first kind, read why private documents deserve extra care online.
Free tier and pricing
DocPro's web tools are free and need no account, except Sign PDF and the signature vault, which are DocPro Pro (A$5.99 a month after a 7-day free trial).
Smallpdf's free plan has daily limits on many tools such as merge, split, rotate, protect and sign, a limited mobile app experience, limited AI tools and basic compression only. Paid plans (Pro, Team and Business) lift the limits, add editing text, OCR and strong compression, and include a Sign.com subscription. A 7-day free trial is offered. We could not confirm current dollar prices from its pricing page at the time of writing, so check it directly.
Features compared
Smallpdf lists 30+ tools, including editing text, OCR, e-signatures through Sign.com, translation and AI tools. DocPro covers merge, split, organize, compress, watermark, page numbers, crop, flatten, annotate, conversions to and from Word, Excel, PowerPoint and images, OCR in English, Arabic, Persian, Urdu and Hindi, password protection, metadata cleaning, an image editor and passport photos.
If you need to change the actual text in a PDF, Smallpdf's paid editor can do that and DocPro cannot. If you need to compress heavily while keeping an accurate result, test both. DocPro's compression re-saves pages as images, so text becomes unselectable; Smallpdf's free plan offers basic compression only.
Apps and convenience
Smallpdf has a mobile app on iOS and Android with scanning, and a Windows desktop app. DocPro has no desktop app. It can be installed from your browser as a PWA and works offline after the first visit. Camera scanning exists only in the Android app, which is coming soon and not released. If you scan paper documents with your phone every day, Smallpdf's app is a real advantage today.
Accounts, storage and privacy details
Smallpdf offers account features, including cloud storage for your documents. Its privacy policy says that, for account users, files are deleted within an hour unless you save them to your file storage, and it describes saved files as staying until you delete them. If you value having your documents available across devices, that is a benefit, and something a purely local tool like DocPro does not offer, since DocPro has no cloud storage.
Smallpdf also says it sets analytics and advertising cookies only after consent. That is not a reason by itself to pick or avoid it, but it is the sort of detail worth reading before you commit.
Daily limits
If you only handle a file or two a day, Smallpdf's free plan may be enough. If you have a stack of PDFs to process, the daily task limit becomes the story. DocPro has no task counter on free tools, though your device's memory is a real limit for very large files.
Signing
DocPro's Sign PDF puts an image of your signature on the page. It is not a certificate-based digital signature, and it is a Pro feature. Smallpdf's signing is delivered through Sign.com, which suits signature requests. If you need someone else to sign, Smallpdf or a dedicated e-signature service is the better match, because DocPro cannot request signatures on the web.
Bottom line: which should you pick?
Pick DocPro when the file is private, when you do not want to create an account, or when you want to run many jobs without a daily counter. Pick Smallpdf when you value the polished experience, mobile scanning, editing text in PDFs and an integrated signing workflow, and you accept that files are uploaded and deleted on its schedule.
Whichever you choose, test with a non-sensitive file first, then decide.
Frequently asked questions
Is Smallpdf safe to use?
Smallpdf says it encrypts transfers, deletes files from free tools after one hour and hosts in Ireland. Using any upload service means a copy of your file exists on its servers until it is deleted, so for very sensitive files an on-device tool avoids that.
Does DocPro have daily limits like Smallpdf?
No. DocPro's free tools have no task counter. The practical limit is your device memory for very large files. Sign PDF and the signature vault are the only Pro tools.
Can DocPro edit the text in a PDF?
No. DocPro can annotate, reorder, merge, split, convert and more, but it does not rewrite existing PDF text. Smallpdf and Adobe Acrobat offer text editing in paid plans.
