Is Adobe Acrobat Pro worth it?

Acrobat Pro does things most free tools do not. Whether that is worth a monthly fee depends on what you actually do with PDFs.

Adobe sells several Acrobat plans, and the free Reader is not the same product as the paid ones. This guide sets out who gains from paying and who does not. We write DocPro, so we have a stake: DocPro is a free browser tool that does many everyday jobs, and we say below where it falls short. Prices are from Adobe's pages as of November 2026 and change by region.

What Adobe charges

On Adobe's US page (US dollars, fetched in November 2026), individual plans are priced three ways: annual billed monthly, annual prepaid, and monthly. Reader is free.

PlanAnnual, billed monthlyAnnual, prepaidMonthly
Acrobat ReaderFreeFreeFree
Acrobat StandardUS$14.99 a monthUS$179.88 a yearUS$24.99 a month
Acrobat ProUS$19.99 a monthUS$239.88 a yearUS$29.99 a month
Acrobat StudioUS$24.99 a monthUS$299.88 a yearUS$34.99 a month

Adobe's Australian page (Australian dollars, GST included) showed Standard at A$23.99 a month and Pro at A$31.99 a month on the annual billed-monthly plan, and A$39.99 and A$47.99 on the monthly plan. Prices differ by country, so open Adobe's page for your region.

The annual billed-monthly plan is the cheapest monthly figure, but Adobe's page says that cancelling after 14 days can cost up to half of your remaining annual commitment. The monthly plan has no cancellation fee. The prepaid annual plan has no refund after 14 days. Students and teachers, and businesses, have separate pricing.

What you get when you pay

Per Adobe's plans page, Standard covers creating, editing, converting and organising PDFs, editing text and images, combining files, password protection, and collecting e-signatures. Pro adds more than 70 advanced tools, comparing versions, redaction, web forms and turning scans into editable PDFs. Studio adds AI and design features. Adobe's help pages list Bates numbering under Acrobat Pro.

Where free alternatives stand

DocPro runs in your browser with no upload and no account, and its tools are free except signing. It covers merge, split, organise, compress, annotate, form filling, OCR, redaction, password protection and conversions. It does not edit existing text, create certificate signatures, request signatures from others or add Bates numbers. Its compression re-saves pages as images, so text becomes unselectable. Its Sign PDF places an image of your signature and is DocPro Pro, A$5.99 a month. For a head-to-head view, read DocPro vs Adobe Acrobat online.

What it costs over a year

Using Adobe's US figures, Standard is US$179.88 a year and Pro US$239.88 a year on either annual plan, before tax. On the monthly plan, one year of Pro would be US$359.88. If you need Pro for a single project, a few months on the monthly plan costs far less than a year, as long as you remember to cancel. If you need it every week, the annual plan is the cheaper way to pay.

A quick way to decide

  1. List the last five PDF jobs you did.
  2. Check each against the paid features above.
  3. If none needs text editing, certificate signatures, Bates numbering or volume e-signing, start with free tools.
  4. If you need one of them for a single month, the monthly plan avoids the annual commitment.
