300 KB shows up on application portals, e-filing forms and recruitment sites that want a CV, a certificate or a few scanned pages. It is a comfortable size for a short scanned document, and usually keeps text readable.
A multi-page scan straight from a phone or scanner is often several megabytes, because each page is a large photo. Compressing re-renders each page at a lower resolution and quality until the whole file fits. Colour photos of pages shrink less than black-and-white scans.
If you are close to the limit, remove blank pages or split out only the pages you need before compressing. Other common limits: 200 KB, 500 KB and 1 MB.
Pages are re-saved as pictures, so text can no longer be selected, searched or copied. Very long or photo-heavy documents may still end above 300 KB; the tool shows the closest size it reached.
Compress PDF is free and needs no account. Your file is processed in your browser and never uploaded.
