About this task

Half a megabyte is a typical ceiling for application attachments such as a CV, a cover letter, a filled form or a short report. Plenty of upload boxes and email systems for job and admissions applications use limits in this range.

At 500 KB the budget is workable for most documents: 5 pages leaves about 100 KB each, 10 pages about 50 KB and 25 pages about 20 KB. Documents made from exported text and vector graphics, such as a CV from a word processor, are already small as PDFs, so they often fit without any compression at all. Check the size first; compression is for scans and photo-heavy files.

If a file is only a little over 500 KB, the quality loss will be small. If it is several megabytes, expect noticeable softness, and consider removing pages that are not needed.

Compressing re-saves every page as a picture. A text CV that is already under 500 KB will get bigger and less sharp if you run it through this tool, so only use it when the file is actually too large.

How to do it

  1. Choose your PDF below. A password-protected file asks for its password on your device.
  2. The target is already set to 500 KB. Change the number if your form uses a different limit.
  3. Press Compress PDF and wait while each page is re-rendered. Longer documents take longer.
  4. Check the Before and After sizes. If the result is still over 500 KB, try a larger target or fewer pages, then download.

Frequently asked questions

My PDF is a Word export and still too big. Why?

Embedded photos or high-resolution logos are the usual cause. Compressing the images in the source document first keeps text selectable, which this tool cannot do.

Which quality should I expect?

The tool starts from a balanced setting and only goes lower if it must, so a file near the limit stays readable and a very large one gets softer.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The file is read and rewritten in your browser.
