How to turn a photo of your signature into a transparent PNG

A photo of a signature comes with a white rectangle and grey shadows that cover the line it is placed on. A transparent PNG removes that. Here is how to prepare the photo, why PNG is the right format, and how to make the file with DocPro, which needs Pro for the final save.

Signing a PDF with an image of your handwriting is common for permission slips, rental forms, internal approvals and delivery notes. The image has to look right: if it carries a white box, a grey shadow or a paper edge, it hides the signature line, text or stamp behind it. A signature image with a transparent background solves this. This guide explains what to photograph, which file type to save, how to make the transparent file in the browser and what the image is worth.

Why the file must be a PNG

Transparency is stored in an alpha channel. The W3C's PNG specification states that PNG supports "Indexed-color, greyscale, and truecolor images ... plus an optional alpha channel." MDN's image format guide is more direct about JPEG: "JPEG does not support an alpha channel", and "PNG is also the fallback for any image needing transparency."

A signature photo saved as JPG always has a solid background, even if it looks white. Once the background is removed, the result has to be saved as PNG, or the transparency is lost. DocPro's signature maker saves a PNG for this reason, cropped to the ink with a small margin.

How to prepare the source photo

The background removal works from brightness: it treats the lightest, most common tone in the image as paper and keeps what is darker. A clean source matters more than any setting.

What a signature image is worth

An image of a handwritten signature is one form of electronic signature. In the United States, the E-SIGN Act defines an electronic signature as "an electronic sound, symbol, or process, attached to or logically associated with a contract or other record" that is "executed or adopted by a person with the intent to sign the record." Intent is part of the definition. The image alone is not what counts.

Rules differ by country and by document. Some forms, courts and agencies ask for a certificate-based digital signature or a wet-ink original. The guide to whether an electronic signature on a PDF is legally valid compares the main systems. This is not legal advice. For contracts and filings with serious consequences, ask the receiving organisation what it accepts.

A signature image can also be copied by anyone who has the file. Keep it in your own storage, send it only where needed and do not post it publicly or attach it to documents you do not control.

How to make the transparent PNG with DocPro

The signature maker runs in your browser and the image is not uploaded. It appears in two places: the Signature vault and Sign PDF.

  1. Open the Signature vault. Under Create new, find How to create and choose Upload image. The other two choices are Draw and Type.
  2. Press Choose image and select your photo or scan of the signature.
  3. Keep Remove white / paper background ticked. Move Background removal strength until the paper disappears but thin strokes stay. If the tool says "Nothing left after removing the background. Lower the strength.", the setting is too high.
  4. Pick the Ink: Black, Blue, Red, a custom colour, or Original colours to keep the colour of the photo.
  5. Choose Signature or Initials under Type of mark.
  6. Press Save to vault. To get the PNG file, use the download button, labelled Download PNG, on the saved item. In Sign PDF the same maker offers Use signature and a Save to my vault tick box.

Saving to the vault and downloading the PNG need DocPro Pro, which costs A$5.99 a month after a 7-day free trial at the time of writing (October 2026). The signature maker itself can be tried first. The vault lives in your browser's storage on this device. Clearing site data, using a private window or switching browsers loses it, so download a PNG of any signature you cannot easily recreate.

To use the image on a PDF, open Sign PDF, pick the saved signature, drag it onto the line and resize it. The guide on adding a signature to a PDF without Adobe covers the full flow and other methods, and signing a PDF on your phone covers phones.

Troubleshooting

What DocPro cannot do

The signature maker removes a light background. It does not trace lines on lined paper, remove strong shadows or separate a signature from coloured or patterned paper. Free options in DocPro are limited here: the Remove background tool is built to cut out people in photos, not ink on paper, and it is not designed for signatures. DocPro adds a visible signature image to a PDF. It does not create a certificate-based digital signature that shows a validity panel in PDF readers. If you do not want to use Pro, your computer's own preview app may be able to build a signature from a camera shot, as the guide linked above explains.

Frequently asked questions

Why must a transparent signature be a PNG?

PNG supports an alpha channel, which stores transparency. JPEG does not, so a JPG always has a solid background. Save the final signature as PNG.

Is a picture of my signature legally binding?

Under the US E-SIGN Act an electronic signature is a symbol adopted by a person with the intent to sign a record. Other countries and some documents set stricter rules. This is not legal advice; check what the receiving organisation accepts.

Is a transparent signature PNG free in DocPro?

You can try the signature maker, but saving to the vault and downloading the PNG need DocPro Pro, A$5.99 a month after a 7-day free trial at the time of writing.

What photo works best?

Dark ink on plain white paper, flat, evenly lit, with the signature large in the frame. Avoid shadows, lined paper and pale pens.

Is my signature uploaded?

No. The signature maker works in your browser. The vault stores signatures in this browser on this device.
