There are plenty of reasons to take the background out of a picture. A profile photo looks better on a plain colour. A job application or an ID form may ask for a white background. A sticker, a presentation slide or a flyer needs a cut-out with a transparent edge. Doing it by hand with a lasso tool takes patience, and many websites that do it for you upload your photo to a server first.
How automatic background removal works
The tool uses a segmentation model, a small neural network that looks at every pixel and estimates how likely it is to belong to a person. The result is a mask: bright where the person is, dark elsewhere. The photo is then combined with the mask so that the dark area becomes transparent. DocPro runs the model in your browser using WebAssembly, so the picture is processed on your own device.
The model is trained to find people. It is good at a single person or a few people, standing or sitting, in a normal photo. It is not a general object cutter, so it can fail on a plant, a car, a pet or a product on a table. It may keep part of the background or cut away part of the subject. That is a limit of the model, and it is why the tool says it works best on people.
How to remove a background with DocPro
- Open Remove background and choose a photo of a person. The first time, a small model loads in your browser.
- Wait while the person is found. The preview shows the cut-out on a chequered pattern, which means transparent.
- Choose Transparent, or Solid colour and pick white, a light grey, a blue, or any colour with the colour picker.
- Adjust Edge softness. A little softness blends the outline. Too much makes a blurry edge, and too little leaves a hard, cut-paper look.
- Press Save image. Transparent results are saved as PNG. With a solid colour you can choose PNG or JPG, and JPG is smaller.
Get a better cut-out
- Use a photo where the person is clearly separate from the background. A plain wall behind the subject works far better than a busy street.
- Avoid clothing that is the same colour as the background, and avoid very loose hair against a similar colour.
- Good, even light helps the model. Heavy shadows and strong backlight make the edge uncertain.
- Use a sharp photo. A blurry outline gives a blurry mask.
- Zoom in on the hair and hands in the preview and adjust the edge softness until no halo of the old background shows.
Photos for forms and passports
Official photos have strict rules about size, head position and background colour, and a rough automatic cut-out is not always accepted. For passport and visa photos, use the passport photo maker, which has country sizes and can replace the background as part of making the photo. Check the current rules of the authority that you apply to, because they differ and change. Our guide on making a passport photo at home covers the whole process. Privacy
A photo of your face is personal data, and most free background removers upload it. DocPro does not: the model and the editing both run in your browser, and the saved image is encoded again without the original metadata, so the location and camera details of the photo are not carried over. If you also want to clean another photo's metadata without editing it, use Remove photo metadata.
Always check the saved image at full size on both a light and a dark background. A faint halo from the old background is easiest to see against a colour that is very different from the original.
Other things you can do next
- Resize or crop the result with Edit image.
- Reduce the file size for an upload limit with Compress image.
- Hide a face or detail instead of the background with Blur faces in photos.
- Convert the format, for example PNG to JPG for a form, with Image converter.
Frequently asked questions
Does it work on objects and products?
Not reliably. The model is made to find people, so other subjects can be cut out badly.
Can I keep the transparent background?
Yes. Choose Transparent and save as PNG. JPG cannot store transparency.
