How to sign a PDF on your phone

Draw your signature with a finger, drop it on the right line and save a signed copy, all in your phone browser.

Most forms still arrive as a PDF with a line that says “sign here”. You do not need to print it, sign it and scan it again. A phone and a browser are enough, and the file can stay on your device the whole time.

Know which kind of signature you need

There are two things people call a signature on a PDF. The first is an image of your handwritten signature placed on the page, the digital equivalent of signing a printout. The second is a certificate-based digital signature, which cryptographically ties the document to an identity and shows a validity panel in PDF readers. The steps below create the first kind.

For most everyday paperwork, such as permission slips, rental applications, internal forms and delivery notes, an image signature is what the other side expects. Some contracts, government filings and regulated industries require more. If you are unsure, ask the person who sent the document what they will accept before you sign.

Sign a PDF in DocPro, step by step

  1. Open Sign PDF in your phone browser.
  2. Tap the drop area and choose the PDF from your files, downloads or cloud storage.
  3. Create a signature. Choose Draw and sign with your finger, Type to turn your name into a script-style signature, or Upload image if you have a photo or scan of your signature.
  4. Place it. Drag the signature onto the signature line on the right page, then use the size control to make it fit.
  5. Save. The tool writes a new PDF with the signature on it and your original file is not changed.

Sign PDF is a Pro tool on the web. You can open it, add your file and create your signature without an account, and the final save step asks you to sign in to DocPro Pro. The file is processed in your browser and is not uploaded.

Tips for a signature that looks right

Initials, dates and several signatures

Many documents ask for initials on every page or a signature in several places. You can place as many signatures as you need, on any pages. Create an initials version the same way, and place it where required. If you sign the same kinds of documents often, save your signature to the Signature vault so you can reuse it. It is kept on your device, not on a server.

Dates and printed names are text, not signatures. If the PDF has fillable fields, fill them first in your PDF reader. If it does not, you can add typed text with the Annotate tool before signing.

After you sign

When an image signature is not enough

If the recipient asks for a signature with an audit trail, a verified identity, a witnessed signature or a certificate, an image placed on the page will not do. Those cases need a dedicated e-signature service or a signing certificate. DocPro does not issue certificates, and it does not claim an image signature has any special legal standing. Whether it is accepted depends on the document, your country and who is asking.

Check the requirements of whoever receives the document. If they need a particular kind of signature, ask before you sign.

For everything else, signing on your phone takes a minute: open the tool, add the file, sign, place and save.
