Redact a PDF for real, free

Permanently black out text on a PDF

Loading…

About this tool

Black out sensitive text so it cannot be copied or recovered. Draw boxes on the page previews, or search for a word and box every match. Each page with a box is turned into an image with the boxes burned in, so the covered text is removed from the file, and the document metadata is stripped. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is uploaded.

How to redact a PDF for real, free

  1. Choose a PDF.
  2. Draw boxes over what must be hidden, or type a word and press Find and box all, then check every page.
  3. Press Redact and save PDF. Redacted pages become images; download the new file.

Frequently asked questions

Is the hidden text really removed?

Yes. A page with a box is replaced by a picture of the page with the boxes painted black, so the text under them is not in the new file. DocPro also checks the result and warns you if selectable text is found on a redacted page.

Why can I no longer select text on redacted pages?

Because those pages are now images. That is what makes the redaction permanent. Pages without boxes are kept as they were, with their text.

Is my file uploaded?

No. The PDF is opened, redacted and saved in your browser and never leaves your device. Always look through the result before you share it.
